Celebrities, psychics, and sultry singles were all within reach by dialing 1-900 and paying the toll, of course. Regulation spurred by kids running up whopping phone bills to talk to Santa or their favorite singer eventually phased out the 900 number. Even without regulation, the emerging prevalence of internet access would have rendered it obsolete.
